Baseball Picked Sixth in CACC Preseason Coaches Poll

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The University of the Sciences baseball team has been voted sixth in the 2019 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Baseball South Division Preseason Coaches Poll, released on Monday.

Defending CACC Tournament champion Wilmington is atop the Southern Division's poll having received eight of a possible 12 first-place votes.

Defending CACC regular season champion Felician is second with three top-votes, while fifth-place Jefferson garnered the remaining one.

Chestnut Hill and Goldey-Beacom are third and fourth, respectively, representing the two teams the coaches think will join Wilmington and Felician in the CACC Tournament.

The top four teams from each division advance to the CACC Tournament, which begins with a single-elimination Quarterfinals round hosted by the higher seed on May 4.

The four winners from the Quarterfinals move on to a double-elimination four-team bracket, hosted by Post on May 9-11.

The University of the Sciences baseball team is looking to qualify for its first CACC Tournament since 2011.

The Devils bring back nine pitchers that threw at least 15.0 innings last year.

Rising sophomore Hiro Mizutani led USciences in innings pitched (49.0), strikeouts (48), appearances (11), games started (10) and wins (2) as a freshman in 2018.

The Devils also return rising sophomore John McCrane, who was atop the team in appearances (11), strikeouts per nine innings (12.81) and saves (2), as well as rising junior Ryan Johnson, who paced the team in ERA (4.64).

Also coming back is 2017 CACC Rookie of the Year Kris Morgenweck, who had an injury-shortened campaign a year ago.

Offensively, University of the Sciences returns its top two hitters in rising senior Nick Amicon (.329 BA, 46 H) and rising sophomore Jordan Stennett (.321, 44). Stennett also led the Devils with 25 runs, 10 doubles and three triples.

Rising junior Nate Steele and rising sophomore Jacob Whittington were also were mainstays in the lineup throughout a majority of last season.

In the North Division Poll, defending regular season champion Post sits atop the preseason rankings by one point over Dominican. Post earned seven first-place votes, while Dominican received the other five.
