Baseball Cannot Hold Leads in Game Two; Devils Swept by Chestnut Hill on Wednesday

PHILADELPHIA – The University of the Sciences baseball team held multiple leads in game two, but Chestnut Hill would pull away for a 7-3 win to complete a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader sweep over the Devils on Wednesday afternoon at Richie Ashburn Field

The Griffins controlled game one, leading throughout in a 14-5 victory.

Chestnut Hill also struck first in the nightcap with a run in the first, but USciences had an immediate answer as its first three batters all reached.

Matt McClennen led off with a walk, before back-to-back RBI base-hits by AJ Pena (double) and Nick Amicon (single).

After the Griffins tied it back up in the third, University of the Sciences re-gained the lead in the bottom-half thanks to a leadoff error, an Amicon single, and a wild pitch.

Chestnut Hill would pull away with four in the fourth though, and the Devils could not threaten again until stranding two runners in the seventh.

In addition to Amicon, McClennen also reached base twice in game two with a hit, in addition to his first inning base on balls.

McClennen and AJ Pena both had two hits in game one, while freshman Mike Gaitan recorded his first career hit, a two-RBI single, and Connor Young pitched a scoreless inning of relief.

The two teams close out their four-game series this Friday with a 12 p.m. doubleheader at Chestnut Hill.
