PHILADELPHIA – After trailing by 12 in the first half, and 13 with 11:36 remaining, the University of the Sciences made a late push before eventually losing, 59-44, at Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) South leader Jefferson on Wednesday night.
Down 26-39 with 11:36 to play after Jefferson (17-9, 12-3 CACC) completed a 14-4 run, USciences got as close as four, 36-40, with 6:11 to go before eventually running out of gas.
Flo Da-Silva began the surge, making it a 10-point game, 30-40, with two free throws at the 9:04 mark. Will Gregorits then made a layup 1:12 later, before Brendan Crawford nailed a jumper to make it a two-possession game with 7:07 left.
Crawford then tipped in a miss to shrink the deficit to 36-40, only to have Jefferson rattle off the next seven points to put the game out of reach.
Crawford and Gregorits led University of the Sciences with 12 points each, with Crawford adding a career-best four blocks.
Gregorits also pulled down a team-high eight rebounds to fall two boards shy of his 10th double-double of the season. Notably, he moved into eighth in program history with 788 career rebounds, and sixth with 251 career offensive rebounds.
Paddy Casey fell one point shy of joining them in double-figures, while also dishing out three assists.
USciences made all nine of its free throw attempts for its most makes without a miss since going 17-of-17 in a win at Felician on Feb. 1, 2014, but the Devils could not overcome a 29.8 percent shooting performance (17-of-57), including going just 1-for-12 from 3-point range.
University of the Sciences (12-11, 8-7) found itself down 20-8 just nine minutes into play, but did well to climb right back into it with 10 of the next 11 points over the next 5:41 to get as close as 21-18 on Casey's layup at the 5:19 mark.
After Jefferson took a 25-20 lead into the half, the Devils also got within three, 25-22, just 15 seconds out of the locker room on two Gregorits free throws before the Rams made their run.
USciences returns home to host Post for Senior Day on Saturday, Feb. 10 at 3 p.m. The Devils will honor its two seniors, Gregorits and Da-Silva, prior to tip, while also celebrating "Autism Speaks – Coaches Powering Forward."
