Men’s Tennis Beats Cedarville on Final Day of Spring Break Trip

ORLANDO – The University of the Sciences men's tennis team defeated Cedarville 5-4 on the final day of its spring break trip on Friday, marking the second time the Devils won by a single point down in Florida.

USciences (3-5) also lost matches to Bentley (12-6) and Florida Tech (7-1) over the final two days of its trip, ending its six-day trip with a 2-3 record.

Sahas Chandragiri and Chandat Phan were the heroes against Cedarville (4-7), pairing for University of the Sciences' only victory at doubles while also winning their respective singles matches.

The duo helped the Devils avoid a doubles sweep with an 8-4 decision at the third flight, and the two are now tied for second on the team with two doubles victories each.

It took three sets for Chandragiri to win his third match of the trip, as he bounced back from a 3-6 first set setback in his third flight match to take the second by the same score. He then prevailed 10-5 in the super tiebreaker for his team-best fourth victory of the season.

Phan swept his No. 4 singles opponent, 7-5, 6-1, for his third victory of the season.

Also winning his third match of the trip and fourth match of the season was Borna Novak. There was little separation between he and his first flight opponent as the two each won an opening set by two games, 7-5, 4-6. The super tiebreaker then came down to the slightest of margins, with the junior prevailing 11-9 for his 24th career win to move into ninth in program history.

USciences' other win came at No. 5 singles, where Rakesh Chamala dropped just five games to win his second match of the trip.

Phan came closest to earning the Devils a point on Thursday night against Bentley, falling in a thrilling three-set match at No. 4 singles. After getting swept in the first, he responded with an exciting 7-6 second set triumph. The third set super tiebreaker was much of the same, coming down to the final points with the junior falling 10-12.

After the Cedarville triumph, it was Novak winning a team-high four games at No. 2 singles against Florida Tech.

University of the Sciences returns to action up north when it travels to District of Columbia for an 11:30 a.m. start on Thursday, March 15.
