Softball Hangs with Kutztown in Game One; Devils Swept by Golden Bears in Doubleheader on Senior Day

PHILADELPHIA – The University of the Sciences softball team tied game one of doubleheader with Kutztown at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth on Sunday afternoon, before the Golden Bears went on to score the next nine runs between the end of game one and the beginning of game two.

After game one finished 5-1, a five-run second in the nightcap was more than enough for KU's eventual 10-2 game two win.

Prior to the game, University of the Sciences honored the four members of the USciences Softball Senior Class of 2019: Evangelina Olivera Brittany Rickard, Rebecca Colandrea and Kaitlyn Gaynor.

Gaynor pitched game one and finished with six strikeouts – and no walks - to move into second in program history with 334 for her career.

After stranding runners in scoring position in each of its first two at-bats, USciences was finally able to negate Kutztown's first inning run on a Gabrielle Simms leadoff single and Madison LaPlante triple.

After giving up two hits in the first inning, Gaynor gave up just two over the next three frames.

Two singles and an error loaded the bases with one out in the top of the fifth though, and Kutztown broke the game open with a grand slam as USciences was not able to threaten again until the seventh.

The Devils got within three on an Olivera single, but could not bring the tying run to the plate.

Lauren Davis got the seventh started with a one-out single, her second hit of game one for her second multi-hit game of the year.

Simms' fourth inning single was one of her two base-hits in the opener, her ninth multi-hit game of the season.

Davis (triple) and LaPlante drove in Nina Cencetti and Rickard in game two, while Simms added a double.

University of the Sciences returns to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play this Wednesday, hosting Wilmington for a 2:30 p.m. doubleheader.
