WILMINGTON, Del. – Reigning Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Player of the Year Karla Miletic picked up a statement win, battling through three tough sets to outlast the No. 1 singles player from preseason favorite and defending league champion Goldey-Beacom on Tuesday afternoon.
Two sets were not enough to decide a winner between Miletic and her counterpart Lotte Lesscher y Post. With each winning a set 6-2, Miletic the first and Lotte the second, the match came down to a third set tiebreaker that would not disappoint. Just as the two had done throughout the match, they went back-and-forth until Miletic prevailed by the slightest of margins – 10-8.
The win was the 18th of her career for the sophomore, which moved her into a tie for ninth in program history.
Miletic and partner Abbygail Gamarnik also won a team-high two doubles games at the first flight for USciences, but it was not enough to slow down Goldey-Beacom as the Lightning picked up an 8-1 victory in the conference opener for both teams.
Aside from Miletic, it was Gamarnik who won a team-best four games at No. 4 singles for University of the Sciences.
The Devils continue CACC play on Sunday, Sept. 17, as they welcome Concordia for their home-opener at 12 p.m.
