Novak Victorious Twice; Two Women’s Doubles Pairs Win on First Day of ITA East Regional Championships

FLUSHING, N.Y. – Borna Novak won both a singles and doubles match, and two-of-three women's doubles pairs won as the University of the Sciences tennis program began play at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Regional Championships on Friday at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. 

Novak defeated Henry Masters of Concordia, the defending Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) and East Region champion, 8-3 in his first round qualifying match.

Novak then came close to advancing into the main draw, but came up just short with an 8-6 loss to his opponent from Franklin Pierce in the second qualifying round.  

His other win came in doubles play with partner Borna Markusic, with the two holding off a duo from NYIT 8-6 to advance to the Round of 32. 

Notably, the victory was the 32nd of Novak's career, moving the senior into a tie for ninth in program history. 

Giving USciences three teams in Round of 32 were Karla Miletic and Abbygail Gamarnik and Elkanah Linder and Julia James, who were respective 8-3 and 8-5 winners over teams from Merrimack and Le Moyne.  

With the result, Gamarnik moved into third in program history with her 33rd career doubles win. 

Sahas Chandragiri nearly gave USciences two wins over Concordia but fell just short, 8-6, in his first round qualifying match. 

Also losing by the narrow 8-6 margin in the first qualifying round was Nathan Nguyen, who fell to an opponent from Le Moyne, another NCAA Tournament team from a season ago.  

Nguyen then lost his doubles match with partner Jack Kosiorowski by the same score, to a duo from last year's CACC finalist Chestnut Hill, while Chanadrigi and Evan Halperin also fell 8-6 to a team from Le Moyne.   

Kosiorowski, who received a bye into the second qualifying round as the fifth-seeded qualifier, lost his match with yet another opponent from a 2017-18 NCAA Tournament team, falling 8-2 to his foe from Queens. 

Rakesh Chamala also battled against an opponent from Queens, in the first qualifying round, dropping a close 8-5 decision. 

On the women's side, Garmarnik and Danielle Paran both battled to 8-5 defeats. Gamarnik's came against a foe from defending CACC champion Concordia, while Paran's came against a compeitor from Southern New Hampshire. 

Day two of the ITA East Regional Championship continues today, with Markusic and Miletic both beginning play in the main draw in their respective singles draws.
