Miletic Advances to Round of 16 in Both Singles and Doubles Draw for Third Straight Year; Markusic Moves on to Round of 16 in Men’s Draw

FLUSHING, N.Y. –Karla Miletic advanced to the Round of 16 in both the singles and doubles draw for the third year in a row, and freshman Borna Markusic won two matches to move on to the Round of 16 himself to highlight University of the Sciences' second day of action at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Regional Championship, hosted at the Billie Jean Tennis King National Center, on Saturday.

Miletic and partner Abbygail Gamarnik comfortably defeated a duo from Stonehill, 8-2, to give the pairing an opportunity to move on to the Quarterfinals for a second straight year.

In their way stands the eighth-seeded pairing of Josefina Torres Martin and Angelica Karlsson Hantis, the second pairing from defending Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) champion Concordia.

The result moved Gamarnik into a tie for second in program history with 34 career doubles wins, and Miletic into a tie for fourth with 32.

Playing her first singles match of the weekend, fifth-seeded Miletic advanced past Tadi Mrewa of Concordia 6-2, 7-5 in her Round of 32 matchup.

She will face Alexxa Etienne of Southern New Hampshire, who was seed into the main draw, in the Round of 16.

On the men's side, Markusic swept past his opponent from Stonehill 6-3, 7-5 in his first singles match of the weekend in the Round of 64. Facing 16th-seeded Diego Espinella of 2017-18 NCAA Tournament team NYIT in the second round, the rookie again won in straight sets 7-5, 6-4.

If he is to advance to the Quarterfinals tomorrow he well have to get past the top seed and defending semifinalist Tiago Fernandes of Southern New Hampshire.

Markusic also came close to a Round of 16 appearance in doubles play with partner Borna Novak, but the two fell just short in a 6-8 loss to a duo from last year's NCAA Round of 16 participant Queens.

Also in action on Saturday were Elkanah Linder and Julia James, who lost their Round of 32 matchup 8-1 to a pairing from Le Moyne.
