PHILADELPHIA – The University of the Sciences baseball team overcame a late deficit in game one, only to suffer defeat on a walk-off single in an eventual Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader sweep at Chestnut Hill on Saturday.

The Devils could then not get the offense going in game two, recording just one hit.

With game one starter John McCrane holding Chestnut Hill scoreless through four innings, University of the Sciences had established a 1-0 lead via Jordan Stennett's second-inning single.

The Griffins finally got on the board in the fifth though, the first of four straight runs.

Back-to-back RBI base-hits by Matt McClennen (triple) and AJ Pena (single) got USciences within one in the seventh, and even though Chestnut Hill made it a two-run game in bottom-half, the Devils came all the way back to re-take the lead in the eighth.

Singles by Chris Anderson and Nate Steele, and a Stennett walk loaded the bases with one out, before a Ryan Johnson base on balls made the score 5-4.

Joe Duffy then came through with the go-ahead two-run single, which put the Devils back on top 6-5.

Coming on for the close, Johnson would strand runners on first and third in the bottom of the eighth, but four Griffin singles in the ninth led to the tying and go-ahead runs scoring on a one-out walk-off.

Stennett and Steele both reached base three times in game one with two singles and a walk.

Jake Patridge allowed just one hit in his two innings of relief in game two.

University of the Sciences will host Bloomfield tomorrow at 12 p.m., in a game rescheduled from today.
