Early Second Half Run Erases Men’s Basketball’s Halftime Lead in Loss to Concordia

PHILADELPHIA – The University of the Sciences men's basketball team erased multiple seven-point first half deficits to take a four-point lead into the half, only to have Concordia storm back out of the locker room to put the Devils away in an eventual 80-72 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) win on Saturday afternoon at Bobby Morgan Arena.

The two teams opened the second half trading baskets to make the score 50-46, before the Clippers scored 14 unanswered in just 2:47 to take the first double-digit lead of the afternoon, 60-50, with 15:25 to play.

USciences managed to get as close as five, 67-62, on a Jordan White 3-pointer with 9:30 remaining, but Concordia came back with five straight points, and by the time a Paddy Casey layup made the score 78-72 with 2:22 to go it was too little too late.

Casey led all players with 19 points and three steals, while White scored a season-high 16 points on 4-of-5 shooting, 3-of-4 3-pointers and 5-of-6 free throws.

Brendan Crawford was also in double-figures with 12 points.

Tanner Kerr had a game-high nine rebounds, while Beni Toure led all players with a career-best five assists.

University of the Sciences outshot Concordia, 46.3-44.0 percent, but the Clippers made six more field goals on 15 more attempts thanks to a 41-31 rebounding advantage, which led to a 21-6 edge in second-chance points.

The Clippers led by as many as seven four times in the first half, including at 35-28 with 8:40 left, but USciences would rattle off 10 unanswered in 1:33 to take its first lead since the opening minute after back-to-back Brandon Starr baskets made the score 38-35 with 6:35 showing.

Concordia responded with a 9-2 spurt, but University of the Sciences scored the final eight points off the half. White scored the first five, before Casey sent the Devils into the locker room ahead 48-44 with a 3-pointer.

University of the Sciences stays within the city to travel to Holy Family for a 7s:30 p.m. tip on Wednesday, Feb. 13.
