FLUSHING, N.Y – Oscar Serra advanced to the Round of the 32 at the Intercollegiate (ITA) East Regional Championships hosted at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center on Saturday, where he would drop a hard-fought match to the No. 2 overall seed.
Competing for University of the Sciences for the first time, the sophomore transfer won his Second Round Qualifying match yesterday before prevailing in three sets in the Round of 64 this afternoon.
He had to come back from dropping the first set in a tiebreaker in order to do so. After falling 6-7 (4), Serra took the second set 6-2 before prevailing over his challenger from District of Columbia in the super tiebreaker 11-9, capping a two hour thriller.
In the Round of 32, 45 minutes later, he faced a foe from Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) perennial power Concordia, coming up short in two close sets, 3-6, 5-7.
Borna Markusic came up just short of joining him in the Round of 32, as he also came back from losing the first set - 4-6 - to win the second, 6-3. His competitor from Adelphia took the super tiebreaker 10-7.
Karla Miletic was the other Devil to compete in the Round of 64 in the singles draw, and she fell in two competitive sets, 5-7, 5-7, against an opponent from Concordia.
In doubles action, all three USciences teams to play in the Round of 32 on Saturday drew seeded opponents.
Serra and Markusic hung tough in an 8-6 setback to the No. 4 seed from defending CACC champion Concordia.
Miletic and Myra Anwar also drew an opponent from Concordia, the No.1 overall seed, and they would fall by a score of 8-3.
