FLUSHING, N.Y. – All five women to compete in the First Qualifying Round of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Regional Championships won, highlighting the University of the Sciences tennis program's first day at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center on Friday.
Four of the five women to emerge victorious won their match by at least four games, with senior Gabrielle Soriano prevailing in a tiebreaker, 9-8 (2), against an opponent from Molloy.
It was the first career ITA Regionals victories for all five, three of whom (Anwar, Le, Soriano) were making their first career appearance.
Le and Soriano then put an exclamation point on their day by pairing for a sweep of a team from St. Thomas Aquinas to move on to the Round of 32 in the doubles draw.
There they will be joined by Anwar and Miletic, who defeated a duo from defending Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Tournament champion Wilmington 8-3.
Miletic has now won a doubles match at ITA's in all four of her years, with three different partners.
As the No. 11 overall seed, she will also be playing in the main draw of the singles tournament tomorrow after receiving a bye into the Round of 64.
Markusic defeated his opponent from St. Michael's 8-1, and Serra emerged victorious over a competitor from Roberts Wesleyan 8-3 in his first career match as a Devil.
The two then paired for an 8-4 triumph over a duo from District of Columbia to advance to the Round of 32 in the doubles draw.
"Considering the big stage this was at the US Open, being down a few players, and with half of our team making their debuts at the event, going undefeated in five ladies matches and having two guys go unbeaten in singles and doubles on the day was such a great effort," said Head Coach Nick Margiasso.
"I thought, this early in the season, the team gave me my proudest day as a Devil so far and they should be even happier with themselves because they put in the hard work for this big start," Margiasso continued. "Now it is time to build on it."
Mazurek was the closest to winning in Second Round Qualifying, falling just short of moving on to the main draw after a 7-9 setback to an opponent from Adelphi.
Jack Kosiorowski also came close to advancing, falling by the narrowest of margins, 8-9 (6), against a league foe from Post in his First Round Qualifying match.
