RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The University of the Sciences volleyball team fought back from an 0-2 deficit to win the third set, before Felician would pull away in the fourth for a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victory over the Devils on Saturday afternoon at Job Gymnasium.
After Felician took the first two sets 25-19 and 25-18, USciences came out strong in the third, canceling out the opening Golden Falcons point with an Elizabeth Checca kill and Jenna Kwiecinski service ace to take a lead it would not relinquish.
Felician would get as close as one of four occasions, but the Devils would have an answer each time.
University of the Sciences could unfortunately not carry the momentum into the fourth set, where the two teams would trade eight ties before the Devils jumped out to a 12-11 advantage on a Sarah Miller kill. The Golden Falcons would take over from there though, scoring the next seven points to eventually pull away for the win.
Bianca Galis led USciences with 10 kills on .250 hitting and added a season-high three blocks, while Checca and Brooke Witmer each contributed nine kills on respective hitting percentages of .300 and .316. The total was a new season-best for Checca.
Rhiannon Comia had a team-high 22 digs for her fifth straight match with at least 20, as the two teams were even with 58.
Notably, Kwiecinski set a new career-best with a team-high two service aces.
University of the Sciences begins a three-match homestand on Tuesday, Sept. 25 when it hosts Concordia for its Childhood Cancer Awareness Match at 7 p.m. Student-athletes will wear warmup shirts and socks with gold cancer ribbons on them, with T-shirts being sold and a donation container being passed around during the match. Members of the team on the team will also be having a bake sale all day leading up to the match.
