FROSTBURG, Md. – The University of the Sciences volleyball team swept Bowie State (25-15, 25-14, 25-14) for its first win of the 2019 season in a neutral match at Frostburg State on Saturday afternoon.
The Devils did well to bounce back after a tight 18-25, 23-25, 24-26 loss to the host Bobcats in the morning.
Natalia Velez led both matches in kills, with nine and 10, respectively, falling one kill shy of a double-double with 13 digs against Frostburg State.
Angeli Roman Medina led all players with 22 assists in the opener, and had a team-high 11 assists, as well as a match-high three aces, versus Bowie State.
University of the Sciences hit a season-best .191 in the victory.
Kerrigan Clem led all players with four blocks against the Bobcats.
After Frostburg State (4-0) scored six of the first seven points en route to a 25-18 first set win, University of the Sciences nearly erased a six-point deficit in the second.
Still trailing 19-23, the Devils got as close as 23-24 thanks to kills from Sarah Miller and Velez, only to have the Bobcats finally convert a third set point.
USciences staved off two more set points in the third set on back-to-back kills by Wright and Velez to tie the score at 24-24, before Frostburg finally sealed the victory with the two final points.
University of the Sciences hosts Chestnut Hill for both its home and Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) opener on Wednesday, Sept. 18 at 7 p.m.
The team will be selling lemonade and raffles, as well as having a baking sale, with all proceeds going to Alex's Lemonade Stand.
